The Kansas City Star tomorrow will publish a statement from a spokeswoman for Jim Stowers, one of State Sen. Chris Koster's largest donors, that he knew the funds would be donated to Koster through the Economic Growth Council.
“When he made the contribution to the Economic Growth Council, he wasn’t in position to tell them what to do with it,” Stowers' spokeswoman Laurie Roberts reportedly told the Star. “They clearly gave us the impression it would be used to support Koster’s campaign.”
A spokesman for Koster, whose campaign came under fire this morning for using staff to funnel funds, saw no issues with the methods employed to raise campaign funds.
Missouri's Campaign Finance Law, however, clearly prohibits such actions.
"No contribution shall be made or accepted and no expenditure shall be made or incurred, directly or indirectly, in a fictitious name, in the name of another person, or by or through another person in such a manner as to conceal the identity of the actual source of the contribution or the actual recipient and purpose of the expenditure," the Statute says.
More to come.
