BlogNet Ranks: Mid-Year Review

Each week a website called BlogNet News, or BNN, ranks Missouri's political blogs based on their overall influence.

While MPN topped this list on multiple occasions, the week-to-week rankings can vary greatly. Those rankings are based on a number of unpublished factors such as readership and links from other blogs.

"BlogNetNews' Blogosphere Influence Rating combines a variety of data sets to determine which blogs are most powerfully influencing the direction of the Missouri political blogosphere," the BNN website says of the ranking.

Interestingly the BNN rating system does not appear to be correlated to MPN's actual readership or even the frequency of posts during a given week, raising questions about the rankings' legitimacy. Nonetheless, we have opted to provide an overarching perspective of those rankings to determine the blogs BNN would consider the most influential over a broader range of time, since the beginning of 2008.

Since January, the southwestern Missouri blog Life of Jason tops the average scores calculated by MPN, with an average ranking of 2.9. MPN comes in second on that list with an average ranking of 6.4.

Blogs for four major media outlets are also ranked in the Top 10: KY3, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Springfield News-Leader and the Columbia Tribune.

Three Missouri blogs have ranked in the Top 10 on BNN's influence index in more than 90 percent of the weeks since the beginning of 2008 including Life of Jason, MPN, and Tony's Kansas City.

At the beginning of the year there were 57 blogs listed in Missouri by BNN. Since January, an additional 12 blogs have been added to the list bringing the total to 69.
