House Democrats in Missouri are filing multiple bills this session to address what some lawmakers have come to call a deficiency in accountability.
Democrats proposed the ethics package as part of the Moving Missouri Forward legislative agenda for 2008.
“Ending the government-for-sale culture in the Missouri Capitol hasn’t been a priority by the leadership,” House Democratic Leader Paul LeVota said. “We ask Republican lawmakers to join us in taking the lead on accountability.”
One of the proposals will ban former lawmakers from becoming registered lobbyists in the years immediately following their service in the legislature (HB 1754).
“It’s a sad day when Washington, D.C., has stricter ethical standards than we do here in Missouri,” said Rep. Jake Zimmerman (D-St. Louis County).
Other provisions of filed bills include a ban on donations from gubernatorial appointees, a constitutional amendment to remove politics from the legislative redistricting process (HJR 58), a proposal to limit campaign contributions from district committees, and a ban on using automated devices for political campaigns to call voters on the state's no-call list (HB 1547; HB 1606).
